I tried a fan that doesn’t look or work like one… I was blown away by the experience | Technology News

While testing noise cancelling earphones I usually check out whether they are able to kill the hum of my BLDC fan. Fans are noisy and we have come to live with the fact that they can drown out the dialogues from your favourite show if the TV is not loud enough. But do fans have to be noisy? Well, not really, if you have tried out the latest Nuuk Halo 3D air circulation fan.

The Nuuk Halo looks like something a Scandinavian company has created. But this is actually from an Indian company that has Nordic design sensibilities in everything it does. My son came back from a school trip to see the Halo in the living room and thought his dad was reviewing a robot for a change. Yes, the Halo does look like something the Wall-E creator would have conjured up.

But it is actually a fan with a small round base and a similar size head, overall a very compact unit and built to last. The head of the fan rests facing up and changes its orientation horizontally only when you have powered it on with the remote or the touch screen display at the bottom.

Once you power it on, the fan has a 120-degree horizontal and 90-degree vertical oscillation capability that allows it to recirculate air in the house. There are also four wind modes depending on how you want to utilise this fan, from a wave mode to a sleep and hi. Also, the fan comes with a mood light with multiple intensities and that just adds to the abilities of this multi-tasker.

I was initially unimpressed by the speed of the fan, which was ambling away at 3. Then I realised that was just the base level and the speed could go all the way up to 12 where it literally blew me away. This fan is not a one-trick pony and it takes some time to realise how all you can use this. For instance, with guests at home I was able to use the fan to redirect cool air from the AC to exactly where they were sitting — remember this fan’s angle can be set exactly where you want it. In winters, you could use the same logic to move the dry heat from the radiator around the room.

Despite the cute red remote, it does take some time to understand all the capabilities of this fan. Also, controlling with the remote, I did find that at times it does not register input with a single click, especially when you are controlling the oscillation. I would have loved the fan to have an adjustable shaft too, though that could have made the fan heavier where it is quite light at the moment.

At Rs 10,499, the Nuuk Halo 3D air circulation fan is something worth investing in for the home or office, given how versatile it is. You will find some good use for it throughout the year. The fact that it is silent is just a small detail in the end.
