Google unveils ‘Ananta,’ its largest campus in India; 5,000 seats, sustainable design, and an AI-first approach | Technology News

On Wednesday, Google unveiled its largest campus in India—Ananta, meaning “infinite” or “limitless” in Sanskrit—one of Google’s largest campuses in the world. Located in Mahadevapura, Bengaluru, Ananta has a seating capacity of over 5,000, and the campus has been designed with accessibility in mind, and the materials used for its construction are sourced almost entirely locally.

“Ananta will be known not just for the innovations that emerge from within its walls—powered by India but for the world—but also for its lasting impact. Six years ago, we made a pivotal shift, embracing an AI-first approach. We recognised India’s potential not only as a deep talent pool but also as a place where AI can transform lives at scale. This new campus marks a milestone in the ongoing seismic shift in technology. It is a testament to our ambition to innovate and drive the next transformative leap in AI,” said Preeti Lobana, vice president and country manager at Google India.

To reduce its environmental footprint, Google Ananta incorporates water waste recycling, on-site rainwater harvesting, and smart photochromic glass throughout the building, which helps reduce power consumption.

“India provides a remarkable environment for addressing complex challenges, and solving problems for Indian users often translates to solutions for global users. Ananta, now one of Google’s largest offices worldwide, stands as proof of this belief in innovation and our commitment to building India’s digital future. It represents a milestone for all those contributing to shaping this future,” said Anand Rangarajan, vice president of engineering at Google DeepMind and Bengaluru site lead.

Google claims that Ananta will enable the company to build world-class products and solve the most complex user-facing challenges. With a workforce of over 10,000, Google has a presence in several parts of India, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Gurugram. The company currently follows a hybrid work model, requiring employees to spend three days a week in the office.

Unlike a typical office space built solely for work, Ananta is designed to foster collaboration and rejuvenation. The on-campus amenities include a fully equipped gym, daycare facilities, a cafeteria, and a mini forest named Aranya.
