India’s EV sector is comparatively small compared to China’s, where 11 million electric cars were sold last year compared to India’s 100,000 units. While Tesla has started its hiring process and is currently on the verge of setting up operations in the country, there is still no news on when it will start selling vehicles.

And while Tesla has been long considering entering the Indian market, the country;’s high import duties deterred the US based car manufacturer. However, with the Indian government now reducing the basic customs duty on luxury cars above $40,000 from 110 per cent to 70 per cent, it looks like Tesla is finding the Indian market more lucrative than before.
