Amazon to shut down its Android app store, Coins programme by August 2025 | Technology News

Amazon has announced that it is pulling the plug on its app store for Android users. The e-commerce giant said that developers will no longer be able to list new apps on the app store.
First launched in 2021, the Amazon app store was positioned as an alternative to Google Play Store since it distributed apps that could be downloaded on phones and tablets with Android operating software (OS).
“Starting August 20, 2025, you will no longer have access to the Amazon Appstore on your Android device,” the company said on its support page.
“We’ve decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that’s where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying by TechCrunch.
However, the company clarified that its app store will still be accessible from its own devices such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet. Only a small fraction of users would access the app store from devices other than those of Amazon.
Additionally, the company announced that it will be putting its digital currency programme called Amazon Coins on hold. Any Coins held by Amazon users as of August 20 will be refunded by the company. These Coins could be used to purchase games and apps on Amazon’s app store.
Last year, the company said it has decided to pull support for its app store on Windows devices on March 5, 2025.
